A note on George H.W. Bush and the JFK story

A reader, Laura, takes issue with my recent post exculpating the late President Bush from involvement in the Kennedy assassination. Upon reflection, I think she makes two very good points.

One is about the definition of evidence. Certainty is not required, it is true.

The second concerns a point I had scanted: the declassified Bush records make it clear that someone thought it important to brief George H. Bush about the Miami Cubans under investigation after JFK was killed. I should have noted this fact.

Who thought that Bush needed to know and why they thought he needed to know is an interesting and potentially important fact. I still don’t see what it tells us about the causes of the assassination but it is a salient point I should have mentioned. My conclusion was too sweeping. Thanks Laura.

It is true that former president George H.W. Bush was in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. It is true that Bush became director of the CIA in 1976. But, rest assured, G H.W. Bush did not supervise gunmen in Dealey Plaza.

“I think Mr. Morley is being a bit dismissive of the George HW Bush claim. There really is very good correlation between the figure on the sidewalk in front of the TSBD and George HW Bush, including posturally. So, it isn’t just a facial match; it’s the body that matches as well. But, the case involves so much more than the matching images. It includes George HW Bush interacting with police that day, where he was briefly detained. And it includes all the fishy stuff he said afterwards which makes you realize he’s hiding something. And no, he was not a national figure at the time that most people would recognize. When he ran for President in 1979, millions of Americans hadn’t heard of him and didn’t recognize him.”

Bush’s bad faith

After more than forty comments, I remain thoroughly unimpressed with the claim that George H.W. Bush was somehow (it is still not specified how) had some role (what role?) in the assassination of JFK. More prudent readers say Bush covered up the truth during his one year tenure as CIA director in 1976-77.

The few factoids offered in rebuttal to my post would not sway the average interested citizen, much less a jury. But one is worth noting. …

Russ Baker takes exception to our post of November 25, “Didn’t Do It: George H.W. Bush.” His comment is published in full beneath the post, but since his response has merit, I want to give it prominent treatment here as well.

Russ rightly objects to my linking his reporting about Bush and the JFK story with John Hankey’s video on the same subject. He says:

“To try and distract people from a TON of documented, footnoted evidence on HW Bush’s covert work in Dallas with CIA circa 11/22 by falsely suggesting that I–or anyone–is stupid enough to believe that Bush would be an actual triggerman, well, that’s just beyond the pale.”
